Do you save the woman who murdered you?
In the Rift, you are beaten into consciousness, accused of attacking one of the most powerful women in the Commonwealth. You do not remember the attack, you do not remember your name – you remember nothing. Your memory has been erased.
The Nu-U War has ended, resolved through the unexpected intercession of god-like AIs of unknown origin. The world around you has been reshaped by them into an uneasy mix of advanced technology and elements from the Edwardian Period of Old Earth. For a thousand years, a strained peace has been maintained through enforcement of the Covenants by the Inquisitors.
Now, powerful forces conspire to reshape the future of mankind. The Syndic mega-corporations chafe at restrictions on developing newer tech, the genetically engineered Family resist the prohibitions against genetic manipulation, and the Church struggles to maintain a power base in the face of its increasingly reclusive gods.
The Rift, the deepest gorge on the planet, is the perfect place to hide . . . if you can survive. Hidden from view by a curtain of water that fans from rim to rim, the Rift is a dank and shadowy burial ground of abandoned buildings. For a thousand years, the Ares Corp research facility has flushed its garbage into the Rift, there to fester amidst the scientific equipment of centuries past. Under a continual outflow from the sluice gates above, the Rift remains a damp and hellish wasteland. The air is toxic, the water poisonous, the very ground a shattered jumble of capsized buildings, volatile equipment, and unstable materials. Uninhabitable, the Rift's only visitors are Scavengers, man-machine hybrids who brave its dangers to root among the discarded equipment for salvageable tech they can mount to their bodies. Even they do not stay long--the Rift environment is so invasively temperamental, electronics cease to function within days of exposure.
Inquisitor Gwyneth Cargill's life has been shaped by the beauty, intelligence, and duty bred into her by the scientific legacy of her wealthy aristocratic Family. To her, you are subhuman and unworthy of notice. But she needs you. She is determined to investigate the Rift and the scene of her attack. To do so safely, she needs you, the only person to have survived the Rift, to guide her back down.
You are just as determined not to return. After a lifetime of failed attempts, you finally have escaped the Rift. You know, memory or not, that something had imprisoned you in the Rift your entire life, and that, whatever it is, it is waiting to capture and imprison you again.
Consumed by her need to investigate the Rift, the Inquisitor is prepared to use every tool at her disposal to overcome your objections, including threats, intimidation, even her unrivaled sensuality, and that of her own sister. Long-lived and schooled in intrigue--both are masters in the art of manipulation.
What they fail to realize, is that you are both more and less than you appear.
Remnant Book One Resurrection eBook Stephen Craig
They named him "Remnant" as it was all he seemed. With all their technique they could not decipher this survivor of an attack in the Rift. Syndic, Church, or Family -- the triune rulers of this milieu -- could not imagine how this wasted body had survived in the toxic surroundings of the Rift - the world's garbage pit - for so long. Remnant wondered too, since he had no memory and his body was infused with so many disabilities, yet he knew he wanted to escape from the Rift. When he was found, he was beaten severely as a Scavanger, the inhabitants of the Rift, and brought to a special lab to be healed so they could interrogate him.The society of this world is 1000 years removed from the warring factions that almost decimated earth and caused the destructions that now filled the Rift. But a Mesh of computer connections and some AI's sometimes called gods, and a structured society kept all things running.
This sci-fi novel is intricately crafted and provides rewarding crises amid hints of revelations to come in the life of "Remnant." The Guardians, Althea and Gwyneth, are prominent in this story. Members of the Family, they are beautiful and almost ageless. The dramatic conclusion of this novel then points to a sequel.
This is a very good read. I liked it even better the second reading.

Remnant Book One Resurrection eBook Stephen Craig Reviews
I travel in my work and read a number of interesting books. Not typically science fiction, mostly because they don't keep you connected with the characters, more about the action and events. This book is entirely different, I felt as if I was walking along in every scene - included in the conversations. Their mannerisms, dress, the feel of their surroundings are mezmerizing. I was able to create a vision of their world early and carry it through to an exciting end. Fun read and I hope the adventure continues!
I'm not a huge science fiction fan, but Remnant really held my attention. The way Craig describes the futuristic Rift and the current state of society is fascinating. In addition to reading a great story, I learned a lesson about DNA and got reacquainted with some of Shakespeare's work.
Craig's writing style is wonderfully descriptive without being too over the top. I was able to conjure visual images of the landscape. It is always a bonus when an author can insert one of my favorite words - - nonplussed -- twice into a novel! The book has a very creative plot and kept me guessing throughout. Who is Remnant? I am still not sure, but I will certainly be purchasing the second book.
Great story with so many elements all wrapped up in one book. It is an enticing tale, which reveals itself as the reader peels away like the layers of an onion with each turn of the page the exciting story of Remnant. This book is a journey, which will leave you breathlessly unable to put it down and longing to see where the story will take you in the next book.
Imaginative and thrilling with twists and turns that even the most veteran sci-fi, mystery, adventure story reader will relish. The characters are developed and 3 dimensional with all the contradictions and complexities of people who live off the page. I look forward to the treat of the next book. Definitely worth the price of perusal.
An action filled rollercoaster. Twists and turns with surprises until the end.
This book is well thought out and the world created has depth. The main characters, male and female, have strengths and weaknesses but are still strong. The cultures, societies, and classes are well defined and expressed making you feel as if you are there with the characters as they struggle and shine.
No word or detail is wasted. Every scene and comment relates to the story. A simple conversation or mentioned poem line is significant to later events. The detailed descriptions and character depth draws you deep into their world and you don't want to put the book down.
I never write reviews, but I was pleasantly surprised by this book. The author created a world that feels real and reminds me of the "Wheel of Time" series or Tolkien. I can't wait to find out what happens next so I hope book 2 is published quickly.
This was an excellent book, and it kept my interest throughout. The character of Remnant is so vivid, he drew my empathy, and respect. I was never "lost" in understanding the plot, even though it was intricate and intriguing.
I am waiting for the next installment in this series. This book is well worth the price...worth even more than the $3.99 that I paid. I couldn't put it down. Stephen Craig has crafted a masterpiece in my opinion.
Remnant Book One Resurrection is an amazing read. The twists and turns kept me interested throughout. I found it difficult to put the story away - it kept spinning in my head. I even woke up twice in the night to read more. Although the book was long, there weren't chapters that I thought were extraneous - every word added to the scene and the plot.
I also found the characters to be multi-dimensional. The descriptions were sufficient that I have a mental picture of each in my head. I like it when there's enough information to get a visual without being told every last detail. Being able to use my imagination rather than rely completely on the author's vision makes a story more real to me.
Thanks go to the author for creating this wonderful book. I will read more from Mr. Craig and hope he doesn't make me wait too long for Book 2!
Remnant Book I Resurrection is a compelling, amazingly original read that is hard to put down. It is the first book in a series in which S.J. Craig has created a completely new world that is intriguing to say the least. The main character is an unlikely one that has more mystery surrounding him than not, so as unlikely as he is, you can't help but want to learn more about him. Each character is presented with the color and depth that forces you to see them vividly and connect to them emotionally. Craig allows you to fully enter the world of Remnant by depicting the society, the characters, and the actions so eloquently that makes it difficult to put the book down, and once it is over leaves you begging for more.
